A mature system of record for the revenue team, with strong post-call AI. It is not a live overlay for the rep on the call, and its own documentation describes real-time note-taking as a manual notepad. Buy it for visibility and coaching at scale, not for in-the-moment answers.
What Gong is
Gong captures calls either by joining scheduled web conferences or by recording phone conversations through telephony integrations, then transcribes them. Its transcription page says the AI transcribes in near real time, tags topics, action items and risks, and delivers transcripts within minutes. On top of that sit the products Gong markets today: engagement, forecasting, enablement, agents that automate follow-ups and pipeline edits, and a data layer it calls the Revenue Graph.
Gong Assistant on the call page
Gong Assistant is a chat panel on the right of a recorded call. Quick actions include summarising the call, suggesting next steps, listing objections and drafting a follow-up, and users can ask their own questions or run agents against the call. This is useful work, and it covers several of the same outcomes a live assistant aims at: knowing which objections came up, what to do next, and what to write in the follow-up. The difference is timing. The call page exists once the recording exists, so the rep gets this help after the conversation rather than during it.
During the call
Gong’s help centre is direct about real-time use: if you want to take notes during a call, you do it with the in-app notepad, and those notes are timestamped into the call’s comments. We did not find any documented feature that surfaces answers, objection responses or content cards to the rep while the call is in progress. Gong could add such features, and its marketing changes often, so check the current product pages. As of our review, live guidance is not part of the offer.
Where Gong is strong
- Team-wide visibility: every call transcribed, searchable and analysed for patterns.
- Coaching at scale, with managers able to review, comment and compare across reps.
- Forecasting and pipeline tooling built on the same conversation data.
- Gong Assistant quick actions that turn a recording into next steps and a follow-up draft in a few clicks.
Limits to know
- No live overlay or in-call suggestions in the documentation we reviewed.
- Recording relies on a bot joining the meeting or on telephony integration, both visible to participants.
- Pricing is quote-based and aimed at established revenue organisations.
- It analyses your calls, not your product documents, so it is not a source of factual answers during a conversation.
Who should choose it
Sales leaders who need a record of every conversation, coaching analytics across the team and a forecast built on real data. Those are different problems from the one a live assistant solves, and many teams will end up running one of each. If the immediate need is a rep who can answer a security or pricing question on the spot, look at the live overlay category instead, starting with SalesGhost or Cluely. Our guide explains the distinction in more depth.
